Former President Jimmy Carter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony at the Oslo City Hall. In his remarks, President Carter called the world a “more dangerous place” and cautioned against any preemptive military action. He also spoke against racism, the growing gap between rich and poor, and the role of the United Nations.

James Earl Carter Jr. was born and raised in Plains, a rural farming community in South Georgia. His family instilled in him
the value of hard work and supported his lifelong
goal of attending the U.S. Naval Academy.
Carter received his appointment in 1943,
prompting him to transfer from the
Georgia Institute of Technology to Annapolis, Maryland.
