Russia's Illegal War Against

Ukraine Continues

With Death and

Destruction Endangering

The Whole of Humanity!

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi 1a.jpg

  UPDATES: 2026

Ukraine Zaporizhzya Nuclear Power Station

-

2 July 2026

-

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team based at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) this week confirmed significant damage to a fire station in the nearby city of Enerhodar that plays an important role in supporting the plant’s emergency response capability, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said today.

The IAEA team was informed that the Enerhodar fire station was struck by drone attacks on 30 June. During a visit to the site on 1 July, the team observed damage to the building and several fire-fighting vehicles, which has significantly reduced the station’s operational capacity. Minor injuries were also reported.

The facility provides important back-up support to the ZNPP’s own fire brigade in the event of a large-scale emergency at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

“Any attack that undermines nuclear safety and emergency preparedness is unacceptable,” Director General Grossi said.

Meanwhile, the IAEA team at the ZNPP continue to monitor maintenance and repair activities affecting safety-related equipment at the site, including those on valves associated with the essential service water system and the cooling system of a unit transformer. The transformer supplies electricity needed for essential nuclear safety functions, including reactor and spent fuel pool cooling. The team confirmed that all repair work was completed promptly and the affected equipment was restored to service.

“The repeated need for repairs to key plant equipment is a clear reminder of the fragile nuclear safety and security situation at the plant, and of the need to keep all essential systems fully operational at all times,” Director General Grossi said.

In addition, while repairs to the 750 kilovolt (kV) Dniprovska power line on the ZNPP side of the frontline have been completed, the line remains unavailable because the associated substation, located more than 100 kilometres northwest of the plant, is still not operational. As a result, the ZNPP continues to rely on a single 330 kV back-up power line for the external electricity it needs to support nuclear safety functions.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the IAEA team at the Chornobyl site reported continuing wildfire control activities on the left bank of the Prypiat River, with ongoing fires affecting approximately 130 hectares as of 1 July. No increases in radiation levels were reported. The site also reported the presence of six drones within their monitoring zone during the past week. The South Ukraine NPP also reported detecting three drones in their monitoring area, with the closest being four kilometres from the site.

Also this week, under the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security assistance programme for Ukraine, electronic dosimeters were delivered to the National Scientific Center “Institute of Metrology”, while portable power stations were provided to State Enterprise USIE Izotop. Under the Agency’s medical assistance programme, power generators designed to provide emergency electricity during blackouts were delivered to the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine.

These latest deliveries were made possible with funding from Japan, Sweden and the European Union

Since the beginning of the armed conflict, the IAEA has completed more than 240 deliveries in response to emergency requests from nearly 50 entities across Ukraine.

At least 164 people have been confirmed dead and 971 were injured after the powerful tremors hit northern areas late Wednesday less than one minute apart. It is not yet known how bad the situation is in the worst-hit state of la Guaira.

According to the US Geological Survey, the first earthquake measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale. Its epicentre was near the city of San Felipe, home to some 220,000 people. The second quake was registered at 7.5 magnitude and was reportedly the strongest tremor to hit the country in more than 125 years.

Responding to the emergency, the UN aid office, OCHA, announced the rapid deployment of Urban Search and Rescue Teams from across the international community through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group

“I’m in constant contact with our team in Caracas, led by Humanitarian Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla, to ensure a swift and effective response,” said UN emergency relief chief, Tom Fletcher. “He has spoken this morning to the interim President, and we are assessing urgently what is needed. Our team in Venezuela is working with the authorities to identify priorities.”

The UN health agency on Wednesday assessed there is a high risk from the Bundibugyo strain at the national and regional levels, but a low risk globally.

However, the UN agency’s emergency committee believes that, at this stage, it does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency.

To date, 51 cases have been confirmed in the Congolese provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, even though the scale of the epidemic is much larger. WHO has tallied nearly 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths so far, with two cases linked to the outbreak detected in Kampala, Uganda.

Because no licensed vaccine or specific treatment currently exists for this rare strain the health authorities are seeking to quickly interrupt transmission in a region marked by insecurity and population displacement.

With support from UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, the World Food Programme (WFP), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and other partners, experts and medical equipment have already been deployed to the affected areas, while treatment centres are being set up.

Speaking to UN News, Dr. Marie Roseline Belizaire, the WHO Emergency Director for Africa, emphasized the importance of a response built on community trust. “The speed of the response in the first days is essential to interrupt transmission and avoid a wider spread of this epidemic,” she stressed.

Gaza children trapped ‘in an endless cycle of suffering’: UNICEF

Gaza children trapped ‘in an endless cycle of suffering’ - UNICEF 5.29.2026.jpg

Courtesy, UNICEF/Eyad El Baba: The war has taken an unimaginable toll on children in the Gaza Strip.

“The experiences of the desperate parents I met this past week can illustrate this better than I could,” UNICEF Communication Specialist, Salim Oweis told journalists attending the bi-weekly humanitarian briefing at the UN in Geneva.

Among them is Hind who hasn’t slept ever since her daughter Masa, 4, was bitten by a rat during the night.

They are sheltering in a building “where sewage water leaks through the ceilings, and rodents crawl through the cracks in the building and climb the exposed pipes.”
