Russia's Illegal War Against

Ukraine Continues

With Death and

Destruction Endangering

The Whole of Humanity!

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi 1a.jpg

  UPDATES: 2026

Ukraine Zaporizhzya Nuclear Power Station

-

26 June 2026

-

Repairs have been completed on a key power line and other energy infrastructure vital for nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), as part of efforts to strengthen its access to the electricity grid and help reduce the risk of a nuclear accident during the military conflict, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said today.

The technically complex repairs, preceded by extensive de-mining, were carried out on the frontline under the protection of a localized ceasefire mediated by the IAEA. Agency teams monitored the work in challenging conditions, including nearby drone activity and the sound of military activity in the area.

“Of the six temporary ceasefires that we have negotiated since late last year to help protect nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, this was the most challenging to implement. It required several months of delicate negotiations, followed by mine clearance and repairs on high pylons across the Dnipro River. The IAEA monitored these activities on the ground to confirm they were carried out as agreed,” Director General Grossi said.

“It is an important step for nuclear safety at the plant, where reliable access to off-site power remains essential as all six reactors are in shutdown,” he added. “Both sides worked constructively with us to enable the repairs to proceed. Despite the many military and technical challenges, this demonstrates that concrete progress remains possible, even during a large-scale war. We will continue our efforts to reduce the ever-present danger of a nuclear accident.”

The ceasefire enabled repairs at two separate locations, both of them essential components of the ZNPP’s energy infrastructure: the 750 kilovolt (kV) Dniprovska power line, which has been disconnected since March this year, and the switchyard of the Zaporizhzhya Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP), which helps supply electricity to the ZNPP through the back-up 330 kV Ferosplavna-1 line. The Ferosplavna-1 line is currently the only line available to the ZNPP and has been repeatedly disconnected in recent weeks.

During the de-mining and repairs of the 750 kV Dniprovska power line, the IAEA team based at the ZNPP observed the activities on the plant side of the frontline, while another Agency team was deployed on the opposite side of the Dnipro River to monitor developments from there. This work focused on several high pylons across the waterway, where the transmission line runs up to 100 metres above the water.

At the ZTPP, repairs were completed both on switchyard equipment and on a back-up transmission line connecting the Ferosplavna-1 line to the plant, making it more robust.

However, the 750 kV Dniprovska line has not yet been brought back into operation because of extensive damage to its connecting substation, located more than 100 kilometres northwest of the ZNPP. The substation was reportedly damaged during military activity in late May, and IAEA staff experts who visited the facility this week observed severe damage to essential equipment. Repair efforts are not expected to be completed in the near term, but are on-going, and the Agency will continue to monitor the situation closely.

“The line has been repaired, but it still needs to be brought back into operation,” Director General Grossi said. “Repeated damage to the electrical infrastructure on which nuclear power plants depend continues to create serious nuclear safety and security risks. I once again call for maximum military restraint around all nuclear facilities and the power infrastructure they require.”

Elsewhere in Ukraine, IAEA teams continued to report military activity near nuclear facilities. The South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) informed the Agency that 11 drones had been detected in its monitoring area on Sunday, some as close as 3.5 kilometres from the site. During this period, the IAEA team at the plant heard gunfire and the sound of drones.

The Chornobyl site reported detecting ten drones in its monitoring area over the past week, as well as three fire spots in the exclusion zone caused by falling drone impacts.

Under the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security assistance programme for Ukraine, personal electronic dosimeters were delivered to the State Specialized Enterprise “Central Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management”, mass decontamination systems to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and microwave detectors for physical protection purposes to the Chornobyl NPP. These deliveries were made possible with financial contributions from Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Under the medical assistance programme, the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine received digital oscilloscopes and uninterruptible power supply systems. The delivery was made possible with funds from Japan and the European Union.

At least 164 people have been confirmed dead and 971 were injured after the powerful tremors hit northern areas late Wednesday less than one minute apart. It is not yet known how bad the situation is in the worst-hit state of la Guaira.

According to the US Geological Survey, the first earthquake measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale. Its epicentre was near the city of San Felipe, home to some 220,000 people. The second quake was registered at 7.5 magnitude and was reportedly the strongest tremor to hit the country in more than 125 years.

Responding to the emergency, the UN aid office, OCHA, announced the rapid deployment of Urban Search and Rescue Teams from across the international community through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group

“I’m in constant contact with our team in Caracas, led by Humanitarian Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla, to ensure a swift and effective response,” said UN emergency relief chief, Tom Fletcher. “He has spoken this morning to the interim President, and we are assessing urgently what is needed. Our team in Venezuela is working with the authorities to identify priorities.”

The UN health agency on Wednesday assessed there is a high risk from the Bundibugyo strain at the national and regional levels, but a low risk globally.

However, the UN agency’s emergency committee believes that, at this stage, it does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency.

To date, 51 cases have been confirmed in the Congolese provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, even though the scale of the epidemic is much larger. WHO has tallied nearly 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths so far, with two cases linked to the outbreak detected in Kampala, Uganda.

Because no licensed vaccine or specific treatment currently exists for this rare strain the health authorities are seeking to quickly interrupt transmission in a region marked by insecurity and population displacement.

With support from UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, the World Food Programme (WFP), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and other partners, experts and medical equipment have already been deployed to the affected areas, while treatment centres are being set up.

Speaking to UN News, Dr. Marie Roseline Belizaire, the WHO Emergency Director for Africa, emphasized the importance of a response built on community trust. “The speed of the response in the first days is essential to interrupt transmission and avoid a wider spread of this epidemic,” she stressed.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is deploying staff and emergency equipment to help establish a temporary storage facility for relief supplies, while the Philippine Red Cross and other partners have also begun mobilising response teams.

At least 19 people were killed, along with extensive damage to hospitals, homes and classrooms.

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck at 7:37am local time (7:37pm Sunday in New York), about 32 kilometres (20 miles) offshore west of Maasim in Sarangani province, according to the UN relief coordination office, OCHA.

Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest and second-most populous island, is home to roughly 26 million people. The quake triggered tsunami alerts across parts of the Philippines and neighbouring countries, prompting coastal evacuations before the warnings were lifted later in the day.

Initial government reports cited by OCHA indicate that 19 people were killed, 12 remain missing and at least 134 were injured. Authorities cautioned that the figures remain provisional as assessments continue.

AFGHANISTAN: IN CRISIS

Drought, Malnutrition and a
Worsening Humanitarian Situation

June 22, 2026

Humanitarian resources to support women and their children are diminishing in Afghanistan.

Courtesy, UNICEF/Mark Naftalin: Humanitarian resources to support women and their children are diminishing in Afghanistan.

Aid agencies are doing what they can to help, including by identifying dangerously malnourished children in sparsely populated “ghost villages” where those who can leave do so, said Olga Cherevko from the UN aid coordination office, OCHA

But with nearly 22 million people in need across Afghanistan and the UN’s $1.7 billion appeal only 14 per cent funded, life is “becoming impossible” in remote areas, the agency warns.

LEBANON: UNDER ATTACK

HOSPITALS & HEALTHCARE: TARGETED

Statement by
WHO Director-General on Lebanon

April 9, 2026

WHO LEBANON HOSPITAL BOMBINGS - WAR CRIMES 2026 2ab.jpg

Courtesy, World Health Organization

The Israeli Defense Forces have issued an evacuation order for Beirut’s Jnah area, which includes two major referral hospitals; the Rafik Hariri University Hospital and Al Zahraa Hospital. At this time, no alternative medical facilities

WHO DR. TEDROS 4abc.webp

are available to receive approximately 450 patients from the two hospitals (including 40 patients in the ICU), rendering their evacuation operationally unfeasible. Both facilities are operating at full capacity, including treating the injured from the strikes of 8 April. This zone also encompasses the @mophleb complex, and hosts five shelters accommodating more than 5000 people.

I urge Israel to reverse this order and ensure the protection of all health facilities, health workers, patients and civilians.

Millions Going Hungry

More than 1.8 million children under five are also at risk of acute malnutrition between now and June, according to latest analysis published on Tuesday by the IPC food security monitoring platform (see our UN News explainer on the platform here).

The worrying development comes after the October to December Deyr season rains failed and crop production fell. Those most impacted are poor farmers, pastoralists, and internally displaced people.

Drought, displacement, aid shortfalls

In Somalia, drought, insecurity and conflict in the centre, south and some parts of the north – driven by insurgency, competition over resources and other factors – have displaced people while also disrupting livelihoods and access to markets.

The situation was further compounded by high local and imported food prices, alongside a reduction in humanitarian assistance.

The IPC – a UN-backed initiative – uses a scale from one to five to measure the severity of food insecurity that helps governments and humanitarians to classify crises.
