World Teachers’ Day 2020

"In this crisis, teachers have shown, as they have done so often, great leadership and innovation in ensuring that #LearningNeverStops, that no learner is left behind. Around the world, they have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue. Their role advising on school reopening plans and supporting students with the return to school is just as important.”

General Assembly Closing Statement

75th President of the General Assembly

“This meeting has been substantive and exceptional,” said Volkan Bozkir, wrapping up the Assembly’s 75th anniversary high-level segment, held against the backdrop of the global pandemic.

For the first time in the history of the United Nations, global leaders were not able to meet in person for the General Assembly’s annual debate, but the 193-Member body’s President said on Tuesday that the precautions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic “did not prevent multilateralism from operating at the highest levels.”

hosted by Hiroshima Prefecture:

"UN75 In Hiroshima"

August 6, 2020

HIROSHIMA 75 1aa.jpg

On the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of his city, the mayor of Hiroshima warned the world about the rise of "self-centered nationalism" and appealed for greater international cooperation to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.

ANTONIO GUTERRES 6a.jpg

Courtesy, United Nations

"I am pleased to send greetings to this dialogue on “UN75 in Hiroshima”.   This year marks seventy-five years since the United Nations was born from the ashes of the Second World War.

It also marks three quarters of a century since the atomic incineration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki heralded the advent of terrible new weapons that pose an existential threat to humanity.

Since 1945, one of the United Nations’ top priorities has been the elimination of nuclear weapons.  It is clearly encapsulated in Article 26 of the Charter, which calls for minimizing the “diversion for armaments of the world’s human and economic resources.”  The founders did not want the world’s limited resources to be spent on weapons but on development. . . . "
